- Design -

Lagom (lah-gomm) is a Swedish expression meaning 'not too little, not too much'. Although an ancient word with simple roots, it has gained traction in recent years as a philosophy for those seeking balance, sustainability and mindfulness in their lives.

Developed along the principles of Lagom, our new range of kitchen cabinetry has a clean and simple design with clever construction ideas for ease of use, maintenance and repair or alteration in the future. Whilst the doors and cabinets themselves follow the same design for all of the Lagom kitchens, the layout will be unique to your own home. Customers have the option of 24 elegant Forbo furniture linoleum colours to choose from, as well as unlimited paint finishes or even a contrasting oak finish for individual cabinets or the entire kitchen.

As with all of our furniture, our Lagom kitchens use the highest quality materials for durability. In creating this design we have focussed strongly on longevity and sustainability and offer an alternative to the disposable nature of modern furniture and kitchen cabinetry. You will find no foil wrapped chipboard or mdf in our Lagom kitchens. Instead our Lagom kitchens use just three core high quality materials: engineered birch plywood; oak; and Forbo furniture linoleum.

We use premium soft-close drawer runners, along with the latest morticed soft-close hinges that leave the cabinet sides clear of common cup style hinge fittings. All cabinets are fitted with adjustable shelf supports allowing total flexibility of storage internally, and our corner cabinets include the same adjustment in a cross design to allow items of variable heights to be stored easily.

At Ogilvies of Haddington we are renowned for our unique, exceptional quality, bespoke kitchens, but kitchens designed as one-off projects are unavoidably expensive, as the design, prototyping and set up are used only once.

We have long desired to create a kitchen that is more affordable to more people. So, drawing on our tens of thousands of hours of design and production experience, we have created our Lagom kitchen range aimed at customers looking for something a bit more special than the commonly available mass produced offerings.

We have achieved this through careful design to minimise production costs, but without compromising on the quality of the materials, ensuring the kitchens remain built to last a lifetime.

Guide Prices

Small kitchens are likely to cost between £10,000 and £14,000 (including VAT) for the cabinetry only. When including appliances, worktops and cabinetry installation, costs will average between £20,000 and £25,000.

When considering your layout, cabinets with drawers may be more practical for access but are more costly to produce than open cupboards with adjustable shelving.

Medium kitchens are likely to cost between £14,000 and £20,000 for the cabinetry only. When including appliances, worktops and cabinetry installation, costs will average between £25,000 and £35,000.

As well as more cabinetry and perhaps a greater variety of cabinet types to house fridges or oven stacks, the layout is likely to be slightly more complex involving more work in the installation.

Large kitchens are likely to cost between £20,000 and £32,000 for the cabinetry only. When including appliances, worktops and cabinetry installation, costs will average between £35,000 and £48,000.

Large kitchens will include a wide mix of cabinetry types resulting in higher installation costs, with complex layouts and potentially additional appliances.

We place a high value on the environmental impact and sustainability of our operations, sourcing materials locally, using only FSC certified timber, heating our workshops with wood waste from production. minimising our energy consumption with LED lighting and recycling the vast majority of our remaining waste.

However, the single most important environmental action any designer / maker can take is to design and construct products that last as long as possible, as ultimately it is our consumption of our planet's resources that has the most significant impact. Many furniture and kitchen manufacturers pay less attention to this and some even go as far as to create products with designed-in weaknesses that ensure replacement will be required a few years down the line.

As a small business of furniture makers, we have no interest in designing in obsolesence and failure into our products, and indeed the greatest achievement for us would be to see our furniture outlasting us and even our next generation. Our furniture makers stamp the pieces they have made with pride and hope that these will be found by future furniture makers and restorers.

With this in mind our Lagom kitchen range has been designed to last a lifetime, with the potential for it to be dismantled and moved or resold in the future, should your circumstances change. We have designed it to be easy to repair and be maintained by the owners, with the cabinetry components at highest risk of damage being removable for simple replacement or repair. We have used high quality engineered birch plywood rather than chipboard or mdf, with solid oak detailing and oak veneered birch plywood where decorative oak panels are required. Colour is achieved with either linseed oil based Forbo furniture linoleum, which has a unique warm, matt finish to it. You also have the option of a water based paint finish that can be easily touched up or even fully repainted in the future to allow you to update your kitchen colour scheme.

If you like the idea of one of our Lagom kitchens in your own home then we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Following an initial discussion to understand your requirements, we will provide you with an estimate of costs and lead times. You can then secure your project with a deposit, after which we carry out a detailed site survey and work with you to design the layout and final specification. In most cases, we will take full responsibility for the design and installation, so will prepare drawings for you to sign-off prior to commencing production and see the project through to completion.

However, if for proximity or other reasons you would like to use your own installers and/or wish to carry out the site survey yourself, then we would be happy to discuss this with you and can offer the kitchen cabinetry on a supply only basis, which would obviously save on design and survey fees.
